It’s the time to…Jazz Goa!

Canada-based Neal (Neelamjit) Singh Dhillon who is presently playing in Mumbai is being flown in to open the monsoon opening of Jazz Goa on sunday 27 June, 6pm, at Gonsalves Mansion, Campal, Panjim.

Jazz Goa is a club that seeks to provide a forum and a platform for jazz lovers of Goa, and for musicians Indian and international, who occasionally visit Goa. A two year effort, involving a series of performances by jazz lovers for jazz lovers, finally culminated in the formation of Goa’s first jazz club.

The inspiration and support for Jazz Goa came from George Fernandez, Colin D’Cruz and Lester Godinhon of ‘Just Jazz’. Sunday’s performer Neal Dhillon hails from Vancouver, Canada where he works as a professional musician. He just recently graduated with a bachelors degree in jazz studies from the prestigious Capilano college. Upon graduation he recieved a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to study tabla at the Ustad Allahrakha Indstitute of Music in Mumbai. The tabla is Neal’s first instrument and he studies under the tutelage of Ustad Zakhir Hussain.

Neal has had the opportunity to work with some great names in jazz such as Bob Mintzer, Kurt Elling, Nenna Freelon and Cedar Walton. He has also had the disinction of working with some of India’s finest such as Louis Banks, fazal Quereshi, Rakesh Chaurasia and Taufiq Quereshi.

The Jazz Goa event includes a repertoire of great musicians such as Bondo, Goa’s ace percussionist, Carlos Monteiro, Colin D’Cruz, George fernandez, UK-based Helen Louise Jones and Lester Godinho who has just returned after a very successful stint at Seoul South Korea, amongst others.
